Project Scarf: the Headband

I've been in what one might refer to as a "funk" lately, and I'm not quite sure why. I think it's a combination of many factors: 1) the crappy weather (another snowstorm just rolled through, whoop whoop), 2) the lack of school in my life, and 3) having to wear the same thing everyday. In reference to number 3: my job requires employees to wear a black company t-shirt whenever we're at work. Since I've been working every.single.day. recently, this shirt rarely leaves my boday.

I know, it could be a lot worse. The shirt isn't even that bad--it's fitted, almost is a v-neck, and is made of nicer material than your average tee. And we can wear basically anything else we want as long as we've got the shirt. But there's just something about waking up and knowing I have to put on a goddamn black t-shirt again that just sucks the life right out of me. I used to try to work with it and style it fashionably, but recently I have given up and given in. Today I wore that damn t-shirt, a sweatshirt (I never wear sweatshirts anymore), jeans, and some new Sorel boots I got for Christmas because it was about 0°F out when I left the house. The boots kick ass in this weather, but they are not the most stylish. Oh, and on top of that, I wore an oversized red coat and brown knit gloves that clashed like Lindsay Lohan and sobriety.

But, the good news is that on the random days when I am not working, I dress up like nobody's business. You know. Like in neon pink socks and a voluminous (and very wrinkled) trench.

So, hopefully I'll be over my Negative Nellie ways soon. You'd think the new year (actually, new decade, biatches!) would inspire me somehow, but who knows.

Trench: H&M
Dress & Socks: Urban Outfitters
Necklace: My Grandma's
Scarf: Madewell
Shoes: Betsey Johnson

  1. I love the scarf in your hair--I think I should check out Madewell! I find that a scarf is one of the nicest ways to hold back long hair, whether summer or winter (headbands and ponytails give me such a headache!). You look so festive despite the winter snow.

  2. I'm sorry about the drab work-uniform thing. Consider it an incentive to find better jobs in the future.

This sock/heel combo blows me away. It's super-attractive, massively-chic and aggressively-creative. I've run out of hyphenated adjectives... I love it!

  3. You are mad stylish, yo. I was being all down and what nots.

You look beautiful as always. I love that you put a manly belt over that very feminine trench. It makes it so much more stylish than the sash that comes with a trench.

I love your honesty, Ashley. I could read your words all day!

xoxo and Happy New Year! Here's to meeting you in 2011.

  4. Your pink socks are a so fun - and I kind of need those pumps.

I think everyone gets into a funk in the winter. There's no daylight, it's cold, and most days you can't wear your cute shoes!

Hope things get better and 2011 turns out to be an amazing year!

  5. Oh wow, that first shot is just amazing! I adore it!

I love how you've styled the outfit and those pink socks against the white snow was SUCH a good call.

  6. We all go through funks...some are easy to get out of and some are easier to get into. You look great and fooled me. Hopefully this post breaks your funk.

  7. Your photoshoots just keep getting better. I am with you on the "funk." My bf was out of town for 10 days and I just went to work. Talk about no reason to dress up! At least the snow you have out there looks beautiful. I never got to shoot in the snow and my surroundings look like shiiitttt.

As for wellies, I got mine for $30. Esprit!

  13. you look gorgeous, Ashley.
I went through the same thing over the summer. I work in the deli section of a supermarket and work 5 days a week, so I only have two days where I didn't have to wear a green trilby hat and a green apron!!
It's so debilitating and can go either way- you either can't wait to dress up, or you just don't care anymore!!
Can't wait to see you next semester :]]

  14. I totally understand the whole uniform thing is such a drag. When I get home from work I jump straight into PJ's which means no need for other clothes :P

Love this outfit, the socks totally rock :)

  15. Sorry to hear that you have to wear the same thing every day at work. That would do my head in.

What a way to splash out when you have free rein! I love your trench and it looks amazing with the teal.

  16. Happy New Year, Ashley!
    Loving those pink little socks!
    You look stunning as usual.

  17. It sucks when you have to wear the same thing to work every day. When I worked in a lounge we had to wear all black, only short skirts and boots with at least a 1.5" heel (no, I didn't work at a strip joint but dressed like I could!) and it got boring fast.

I love your scarf and your Grandmother's necklace, it's gorgeous! You look very pretty.

    Happy New Year/New Decade!

  18. Ugh, I would hate to have to wear the same t-shirt every day! But you look fabulous outside of work, as always! I absolutely love the pop of the pink socks...it's so unexpected but it looks amazing! I also love the scarf used as a headband...I would like to try this look sometime - usually headbands of any sort don't work for me because of my weird hairline, but they just look so adorable!

  19. I think this oufit is adorable! The little pick socks are so cute, and I like how you belted your coat. Hang in there, just remember all the money you're making while wearing that black tee and all the things you'll be able to buy with what you earn!

  21. Oh god I feel you on the uniform. I had to suffer through Mc Donalds and Best Buy. ICK.

I love that you went all out with creativity today!! I am loving that contrast of black and pink at your feet and that coat ROCKS!!

  22. THE PINK SOCKS! Rocksome! Loving the scarf as headband too. Thanks so much for your recent delightful comment, you're too good! Happy 2011 to you m'dear xx Comtesse xx

  23. First good luck to us on our endeavor to eat more cleanly!
Second- love the scarf, I can never get them to stay around my head!
Third- so sad about the black t, maybe you will get another inspiration on how to "work" with it.
    You look fab today though
Here's to popping out of your funk quickly.

  27. I love wearing my scarves as headbands! My head is irregularly shaped, so normal headbands dont work as well as scarves do for me ;)

And I'm so sorry about your job!! I used to work at a Robeks (it's like a Jamba Juice) and I know how it feels to wear the same shirt over and over and over, and it sucks cuz I always got smoothie stains on it. Yuck!

  28. I love the pink socks!!! And the headband! And I feel you about that black tee shirt thing... before I quit my job, I had to wear this awful bright orange shirt to work on saturdays and sundays. It was awful. I would try to pair with a cute skirt or something, but it was just awful and annoying.

  29. The pink socks are just adorable yet classy ;)

  30. I can definitely relate with the idea of being in a "funk." For work I was having to wear plain all black everything. It really drains the color out of everything, including your day!
But it's okay, because when you're not in uniform, your "off-duty uniform" looks absolutely stunning!
The dress is such a gorgeous color and looks wonderful paired with the trench, wrinkled or not. The pink socks add such a cute touch!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love the socks! I never know how to pull them off but this is the perfect pop of colour!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Love the scarf as headwrap! It's a go-to look for me whenever I don't want to do my hair or whenever I want to add a little spice to an outfit. In fact, I wore one today!
You look great in this deep green color!
Hope you start feeling better! Maybe it's just winter's fault?

  34. Hold on to those random days when you're not working and you can dress up because I really love seeing what you're wearing! :)

  35. 1) I completely understand the hating the work T-shirt thing - I used to work at Zara and we had to wear the same black blazer, shirt, and pair of horribly unflattering pants every day. I'd find myself wearing a cute outfit to work and changing into my uniform in the washroom there (even if it was a morning shift and I wasn't doing anything beforehand) because I hated not getting to pick out an outfit for the day (my friends thought this was insane).

2)I can't wait to read your engagement ring theory post.

    3) OMG, are TLC medical documentaries not the best thing in the world? Except for the one about the kids with progeria, because it makes me cry like a baby.

    4) You're super cool. I'm adding a link to your blog.:)

  36. I have just the same issue, apart from my work t-shirt is white and because I work in a kids'centre/cafe, there is no point in looking nice as you always come home filthy!
Love this look, I am a huge fan of trenchs and you have styled this so well.
Thanks for your really lovely comment, I really appreciate it!

  37. I feel ya on the whole being in a 'funk' thing, was like that for pretty much all of December, I do however feel Im nearly out of it! hurray!
ps, brave brave woman no tights?!

  38. Super cute! I love the headband, and you're totally rocking the socks with the peep toes! (And brave!) And I totally understand needing to dress like nobody's business when you get the opportunity! Haha, I guess that's the story of my blog! I think the lack of structure after something big like school ends can be disconcerting sometimes! Good luck with all your plans in 2011! :)
